For the past year I have been blissfully unaware of the fact that I have Crohn’s Disease. After 39 years, I know that it doesn’t spontaneously disappear, but since my last surgery I haven’t had any symptoms. Last Sunday night, however, I was very sharply and unpleasantly reminded that my digestive system is NOT normal. During the course of the evening, I tried to ignore what was happening, even though I knew what the ending would most likely be. As I began to feel the familiar–but unwelcome–cramping pain in my abdominal area, I knew that this might not turn out well. The pain was increasing and I tried various things like heat, walking, changing positions so that my digestive tract could straighten and stretch, and even going to sleep, thinking that if I could just sleep I would wake up and everything would be fine.
